The lengths people will go to to erase female characters is astonishing. Exhibit A: estep’s (visually fab) illustration of a ‘genderbent Hulk’ (lol what’s a She-Hulk?) and some fans’ responses of ‘way better than She-Hulk!’. Is womanhood so bad you can only like grrl characters if they’re just ‘bent dudes?

There is a canon genderbend of every Avenger in the movie (including Black Widow, although I haven’t found any decent scans from Captain America: Prisoner of War). If you are into women, Pepper Potts, Kate Bishop, Jennifer Walters, Tarene, and Shannon Carter all, you know, exist and rock (the Wolf Spiders aren’t super interesting but Winter-Soldier-Bucky is set up as pretty much a boy-Natasha).

I’m just not sure why fans are so disparaging of these characters. Dismissive, sure, they’re not in the MCU. But if you want a female Hulk, she’s right there. She’s hilarious, she’s dorky, she’s smart, she’s fun-loving, she’s down-to-earth, and she’s kickass. If you’ve read any of her comics you might know that. Sure, Greg Land can’t draw for shit and Red She-Hulk was fucking ridiculous in the Hulks series. Sure, it’s haaaaard to read comics, even if Defenders is awesome. Dismiss away. Nobody can make you care about female characters.

But to trash on them in favour of male characters? Boring. Go pick up the new Captain Marvel and Name of the Rose and then we can talk.
