black women & creativity

Furthermore, in white feminist class I had to deal with my Professor talking about the GENIUS of Lady Gaga and Madonna as they MAGICALLY TRANSCEND gender standards and blahblahblahblah.

First of all, Grace Jones came first. Thank you very much. But according to my white feminist Professor, Madonna came up with using outrageous outfits to make points. And Lady Gaga copied her.

What she really meant is that Madonna was the first to get real credit for it because when black women are outlandish everybody just thinks they’re dumb and/or confused.

And second of all, I side-eye anybody who attributes genius to Lady Gaga and not Nicki Minaj. Period.

Personally, I’m a pretty big Nicki supporter. And that’s partly (mainly) because she’s a black woman who is essentially lifting her middle finger to everything black women are supposed to be. She’s cute. She’s quirky. She’s just really different.

Different is incredibly risky for black women.

Which has been proven time and time again when people claim that Lady Gaga is deep or whatever but Nicki isn’t.

If I wanted to put blue and pink or whatever in my hair I’d be ghetto. If a white woman does it she’s unique.

I don’t play those sorts of double standards here which is part of the reason why I’m Team Nicki.

And also, because she’s just really pretty and amazing in general. <3

this is so true! i remember when erykah badu came out with videos more often a near decade ago, people were accusing her of being weird and outrageous in a bad way. however, when lady gaga came out, she’s automatically seen as an artist in her clothing. when nicki does it, she’s the “devil” or perpetuating the stereotype of exotifying black women (i’ve seen so many white feminists say this more than poc/black ones). although i wasn’t fond of nicki’s performance at the grammy’s, i knew she would get twice the backlash gaga got when she did “alejandro”. ): catholics thought that she was literally possessed lol.

Preach! So many white folks just LOVE to ignore the fact that Grace Jones had been doing the “strange” and androgynous look for YEARS. And let us not forget women like Lil Kim and Missy Elliot who also did the Avant Garde type of style. Hell, Josephine Baker was doing “strange” before Lady Gaga’s mother was even thought of!

Black people can’t have anything without white folks reducing us to “copying” them…

The hair thing is also quite obnoxious because why is that white women dye their hair and it makes them cool, edgy, punky, and hip but for black women it’s apparently “gross” or “fake-looking”?

People say that? I’ve always thought Nicki does brightly colored hair so elegantly! GaGa could not pull off a pink beehive and t shirt, but Nicki makes it look effortless, like she walked out of some Technicolor world where she’ll be returning shortly to pick up groceries we aren’t cool enough to have here, like neon blue oranges and milk that glows in the dark.

I couldn’t get into her music, but her videos are brilliant, and I adore her appearances on my dash. I wish more artists would encourage aspiring young singers to focus on being students, and I’m amazed at how she juggles having so many expectations put on her.
